Part one in this series is an overview of the prevalence of diseases of the periodontium, linking them back to the current implementation strategies dental hygienists have integrated in delivering complex care. Through a review of the historical survey of periodontal diagnostics, the 2017 American Academy of Periodontology Staging & Grading pieces are reviewed concluding with new clinical parameters in identifying various classified diseases within the spectrum of clinical health.

Gingival Diseases

Part two reviews the complexity of various inflammatory diseases of the periodontium, including both biofilm-induced and non-biofilm- induced cases of gingivitis. Review the clinical markers in diagnosing gingival diseased cases, including contributory factors to the inflammatory disease process in both predisposing and systemic cases. Finally, this program will outline bacterial, viral, and fungal components contributing to reversible inflammatory disease.
